An internationally successful potato breeding program is located in the San Luis Valley, Colorado. This program provides buyers with the most advanced clonal selections available. Several new cultivars have been developed for the fresh and processing industries which are widely grown in the west and many other parts of North America. Recently, emphasis has been placed on developing specific traits in new cultivars including better flavor, high vitamin and antioxidant content, and great horticultural characteristics. Much work has been accomplished on developing specialty cultivars with colored flesh and russets that have specific characteristics for individual needs such as earliness, appearance, and disease resistance. Grower screening of new clones prior to their release and naming helps to assure industry acceptance. CSU has one of its premier research Centers located in the San Luis Valley, the SLV Research Center, with four scientists located on site. These scientists provide seed growers with feedback and data on seed stocks. Additionally, the Colorado Potato Certification Program is located at the same site. This innovative approach coupled with CSU Research and Extension personnel helps Colorado lead in growing the appropriate cultivars that closely fit the buyer’s needs.
